The area of an ellipse with axea a and b is pi*a*b/4. Note that a circle is a special case of an ellipse where the two axes are equal and whose area is pi*a*a, or pi*r*r = pi*r^2 (or pi*d^2/4). The axes correspond to the diameter of the circle, not the radius.
