Question 20574: What does it mean to make y a function of X. For example y=x-3. This is one of my problems. So far this is what I came up with. y=x-3 I added 3 to both sides of the equation. Then I got the answer y+3=x and I wanted to know weather or not I changed y into a function of x.

Question 22210: I've had a problem with math since 5th grade and just last yeat in 8th grade I've been taking a math tutorial class, but all we learn is fractions and decimals. I'm afraid to confront a teacher about my confusions in algebra it because to get the topic fully in my head, i'll be too behind in class. I have a low "B" in my algebra class, and I'm trying to go for an "A" student because I'm technically in high school now. 9th grade.
We were just introdouced to functions, graphing, domains, and ranges. And I really don't want to get lost on this unit. Please can you try your hardest to go through step by step, these functions, and go through several problems about every one of these certain topics?

Question 22233: 6(X+9)+9=-7{9X+5)+7x
SOLUTION
TO GET THE VALUE OF X =
6(X+9)+9= -7(9X+5}+ 7X
6X+54+9 = -63x-35+7X BY MULTIPLYING THE BRACKET OUT
6X+63X-7X = -35-54-9 BY COLLECTING THE LIKE TERMS BY ISOLATING THE UNKNOWN
62X = -98
X= -98/62
X= -1.58
WE CAN ALSO CHECK IF WE ARE RIGHT BY SUBTITUTING -1.58 IN THE EQUATION,IF WE DO SO THE LEFT HAND SIDE MUST EQUAL TO THE RIGHT HAND SIDE.
Let's see.
6x+54+9= -63x-35+7x
6(-1.58)+54+9 = -63(-1.58)-35+7(-1.58)
-9.48+54+9 = 99.54-35-11.06
53.52 = 53.48
54=54
SO OUR VALUE OF X is correct.

Question 21826: I'm studying for the cbest test and unfortunatly when I was in school
I never did study algebra and I ran in to a few that really stumped me
and well I do not think i can pass this test if i do not learn how
they find out what y or x is. My son is cute he is trying to teach me
but I think that this way I can get help from here also.
if not thats ok I can always go get a bunch of books.

Question 22835: Okay. This is a relation (set of ordered pairs) that I have to write an equation for...
(2,12)(1,48)(-1,48)(-2,12)(-4,3)
x : 2,1,-1,-2,-4
y : 12, 48, 48, 12, 3
Okay, I'm supposed to divide the range difference by the domain difference. Well, obviously I have more than one difference so :
range difference : 36, 0, 9
domain difference : 1, 2
So would I divide the 36/1 = 36, 0/2 = 0, and then...9/1??? Or am I going about this entirely wrong? (like I think I am)

Question 22834: I believe this would be the best place to ask...Okay, this is a relation (set of ordered pairs) that I have to write an equation for. The set is :
(-3,10)(-2,5)(-1,2)(0,1)(1,2)(2,5)(3,10)
x : -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3
y : 10, 5, 2, 1, 2, 5, 10
I'm supposed to divide the range differences by the domain differences :
range difference : 5, 3 1
domain difference : 1
But, if I divide 5/1, 3/1 and 1/1, I end up with 5, 3 and 1, as any number divided by 1 is that number. So where do I go from here and how do I get there???

Question 22948: I have an extra credit project due soon and I was in need of some help. Here is the question.
1. Find the minimum and maximum values of the objective quantity.
5x + 2y is less than or = to -17
3x - 4y is greater than or = to -5
x + y is greater than or = to -7
x - y = -1
f(x,y) = 6x + 11y
~* That is the order that it is in on the sheet. I dont even know where to start at!! I think that this has something to do w/ functions though. Any help is really appreciated.
~* Thanks -- Sara ~*

Question 21859: How do you tell if a table or if a graph represents a function?
Well, LET THE TABLE OR GRAPH SHOW X AND Y...WE SHALL SEE HOW OR WHEN WE SAY Y=F(X).LET THE VALUES OF X AND Y BE AS SHOWN BELOW
X....A.....B......C......D......E
Y....P.....Q......Q......R......S.....T....U....V
SOME TIMES THEY ARE SHOWN AS ORDERED PAIRS (A,P),(B,Q),(C,Q),(D,R),(E,S).UNRELATED ELEMENTS LIKE T,U,V ARE LEFT ALONE.
TWO QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ANSWERED WITH YES IF WE WERE TO CALL Y=F(X)...
Q.1. IS EVERY ELEMENT OR VALUE UNDER X HAVE A CORRESPONDING ELEMENT OR VALUE UNDER Y..........WE FIND IT IS SO IN THIS CASE ...SO YES.NOTE THAT EVERY ELEMENT IN X SHOULD HAVE A CORRESPONDING ELEMENT(CALLED IMAGE) IN Y ,FOR Y=F(X),BUT NOT NECESSARILY THE OTHERWAY ROUND..WE FIND HERE THAT T,U,V IN Y ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY ELEMENT IN X.THAT IS O.K.BUT SUPPOSE THERE IS ONE ELEMENT SAY F IN X WHICH IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY ELEMENT IN Y THEN IT IS NOT A FUNCTION.
Q.2.ONE ELEMENT IN X CANNOT HAVE MORE THAN ONE IMAGE IN Y.WE FIND IT TO BE SO IN THIS CASE SO YES...NOTE AGAIN HERE 2 ELEMENTS IN A CAN HAVE SAME IMAGE IN Y AS IN THIS CASE BOTH B AND C HAVE SAME IMAGE Q...THAT IS O.K. BUT NOT THE OTHERWAY ROUND...THAT IS A CANNOT HAVE P AND ANOTHER SAY T AS ITS IMAGE..THAT IS IMAGE OF EVERY ELEMENT IN X SHALL BE UNIQUE.
THAT IS ALL IF THESE 2 QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED IN YES THEN Y=F(X), does that help you understand better?
