x can be any number but it cannot be 0 or -5. Why those two restrictions? Because if x = 0, then you have a division by zero error. Same reason for x = -5.
So the domain in interval notation is:

Find the domain of the function algebraically and write it using interval notation: g(x)= 1/x + 8/(x+5)
***
Denominators ≠ 0
set denominators=0 and solve for x
x≠0
x+5=0
x≠-5
domain:(-∞,-5) U (-5,0) U (0,∞)
