Let x = number of notebooks sold
Each notebook sells for $5. So they earn 5x dollars for selling x notebooks.
Profit: 5x + (-100) = 5x - 100
The profit equation is P = 5x - 100
-------------------------------------------------------
Breakeven point:
P = 5x - 100
0 = 5x - 100 ... at the breakeven point, the profit is $0, so P = 0
5x - 100 = 0
5x = 100
x = 100/5
x = 20
You need to sell 20 notebooks to break even. This is where you do not lose or gain money. You profit $0.
If you sell more than 20 notebooks, then your profit is positive. So the goal is to sell more than 20 notebooks to make this fundraiser worthwhile.
