Question 88581: state whether the given system is consistent, inconsistent,or dependent.
3x - y = 8
2x + 3y = 4

Answer by dolly(163)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3x - y = 8 -------------(1)
2x + 3y = 4 ---------------(2)
From (1) we have -y = 8 - 3x
==> y = 3x - 8
Substituting this value in (2) we have,
2x + 3(3x - 8) = 4
==> 2x + 9x - 24 = 4
==> 11x = 4 + 24
==> 11x = 28
==> x = 28/11
= 2.5
So y = 3(2.5) - 8
= 7.5 - 8
= -0.5
As the given system has a unique soution, it is consistent and independent
