Negative - Positive = Negative
-14 - 17 = -31
Another way to get -31 is to change -14 to a positive and - to a +, like: 14 + 17 = 31. Then make sure to add the negative sign into 31, giving you -31. This is a tip for students that have problems subtracting negatives to positives.
