Question 806810: Hi! I was doing my homework and i ran into a challenging problem. its a table of domain and ranges, and it asks what the equation is that represents the table. the table says x: 9, 7, 5, 3 and y: -10, -6, -2, 2
im not asking for the answer but more of an explanation so i can do it in the future. thank you so much!!

The first thing I did was to take the 4 sets of coordinates and plot the points on a graph. It certainly looks like they are collinear, so I used the slope formula to check:
where
and
are the coordinates of the given points.
If the points are collinear, no matter which pair you plug into the slope formula you will get the same answer.
Then I used the point-slope form of an equation of a line to come up with an equation for this particular linear function.
where
are the coordinates of the given point and
is the calculated slope.
Just plug in the numbers, and manipulate the equation until it looks like one of your given answers.
