Question 641973: Evaluate the function f(x)=2x^3 - 6x + 1 for f(2).
I got 5, but the textbook says -3. If anyone could clear up if I'm right in this situation, or where I probably went wrong, I'd be thankful. :)

Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
f(x)=2x^3 - 6x + 1

f(2)=2(2)^3 - 6(2) + 1

f(2)=2(8) - 6(2) + 1

f(2)=16 - 12 + 1

f(2)=4 + 1

f(2)=5

So you have the correct answer (assuming there isn't a typo anywhere in the book)

Evaluate the function f(x)=2x^3 - 6x + 1 for f(2).
I got 5, but the textbook says -3. If anyone could clear up if I'm right in this situation, or where I probably went wrong, I'd be thankful. :)

f(2) = 5

f(- 2) = - 3

If the book's answer is - 3, then you must have forgotten the negative sign. Check it!!
