Question 63979: Work backward to solve.
Manuel's term paper is due on MArch 31. He began doing reasearch on March 1. He intends to continue doing reasearch for 3 times as long as he has done already. Then he will spend a week writing the paper and the remaining 3 days typing. What day is it?

If the term paper is due on March 31 then it needs to be completed on March 30. If typing will take 3 days then it needs to be written by March 27. If it takes a week to be written then research must have finished on March 20.
If this is day x and three times as much research needs to be done then 3x days of research remain. The total number of days will be 4x=20 so x = 5.
Today must be March 5 with 15 days research still to be done.
