Question 553435: A theater’s maximum capacity is 425 people. The cost of admission to a play at the theater
is $29. The revenue function R = 29n, in which n is the number of tickets sold, represents
the amount of income from admissions for one performance. What values of n represent a
reasonable domain for the revenue function in this situation?
it is5 either.... [A] any real number such that 0 less than or equal to n, n is less than or equal to 425 (cant type in the signs) [C] any whole number such that 0 is less than or equal to n, n is less than or equal to 425
thought is was the whole number answer but everywhere i check it says should be a real number... what is the difference?

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
theater's max capacity is 425.
cost of a ticket is $29.00
revenue function is r = 29n where:
r is the total revenue
n is the number of tickets sold.
-----
in this function, n is the independent variable and r is the dependent variable.
the value of n can be anywhere from 0 to 425.
n has to be a whole number because you can't sell parts of a ticket.
n does have to be 0 or positive because you can't sell negative amounts of tickets.
here's a reference that describes the real number system.
http://teachers.henrico.k12.va.us/math/ms/c30708/01NumberSense/1-4RealNumSystem.html
whole numbers are a subset of integers and natural numbers are a subset of whole number because natural numbers don't contain 0.
i would say you are correct in your assumption that the domain is the set of whole numbers.
that takes you from 0 to 425 in whole numbers.
since tickets are only sold as units that can't be broken down into something smaller than that, you will never get any number of tickets that is not a whole number.
real number includes a lot more than that.
if they had said:
real number such that n >= 0 and n is an integer <= 425, then they would be more accurate since, in effect, they would be describing a whole number.
