let y=side of second square
Total Area = x^2+y^2
Amt of wire used by first square=4x
Amt of wire left for second square=16-4x
Side of second square=y=(16-4x)/4=4-x
Area of second square=16-8x+x^2
Total area=x^2+16-8x+x^2
ans: 2x^2-8x+16
