Question 426462: Why can't I get even the simplest concepts in algebra? I don't think i'm stupid because I do well in every other subject including geometry. Is algebra some kind of a subliminal filter used to keep most people out of engineering jobs?

Not really. Just try to focus on your algebra studies, then you will pick up more and more things. You have to know the elementary algebra by heart before going into calculus and an engineering career later on.

(I say elementary algebra because algebra itself is far more general...it refers to various structures called algebras that have certain properties.)
