Question 38440:
I HAVE A WORD PROBLEM I NEED HELP WITH! A monthly water
bill is calculated by using formula

                         n = (8500c - 53850)/9

where n is the number of gallons and c is the monthly
cost. Solve for c and compute the billfor quanity of
1100 gallons.

Thanks for your help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
n+=+8500c+-+%2853850%2F9%29
n+%2B+%2853850%2F9%29+=+8500c
%28n+%2B+%2853850%2F9%29%29%2F8500+=+c
%281100+%2B+%2853850%2F9%29%29%2F8500+=+c
The cost is a whopping $0.83

I HAVE A WORD PROBLEM I NEED HELP WITH! A monthly water
bill is calculated by using formula

                         n = (8500c - 53850)/9

where n is the number of gallons and c is the monthly
cost. Solve for c and compute the billfor quanity of
1100 gallons.

                         n = (8500c - 53850)/9

Clear of fractions by multiplying both sides by 9

                        9n = 8500c - 53850

Isolate the term in c by adding 53850 to both sides

                9n + 53850 = 8500c

Divide both side by 8500

         (9n + 53850)/8500 = c

                         c = (9n + 53850)/8500

If you like you can factor 3 out of the numerator,

                         c = 3(3n + 17950)/8500

but you might as well leave it

                         c = (9n + 53850)/8500

To finish the problem substitute 1100 for n

                         c = (9·1100 + 53850)/8500

                         c = 7.5 or $7.50
