Solve them how?? Usually you use the function to give you output values for a given input value.

Kind of, yes.
However, functions require a unique y value for each given x value.
So an equation like, , although an equation is not a function because for x=1, y can equal 1 and y can equal -1, so there is not a unique y value for each x.
