*Note: Isolate the variable (to be solve for) on one side the equation.

In the examples you have given: Isolating the variableis done by performing addition, subtraction. multiplication or division on "both" sides of the equation
.
r-2x=14 for x
Isolate x by subtracting 14 from and adding 2x to both sides of the equation
r-14 = 2x
divide the terms on both sides of the equation by 2
r/2 - 7 = x
.
V=1/3bh for b
Isolate b by dividing both sides of equation by h
V/h = (1/3)b
multiply both sides of the equation by 3
3V/h = b
.
2x+a=4 for x
isolate x by subtracting 'a'
2x = 4 - a
divide the terms on both sides of the equation by 2
x = 2 - a/2
.
m-2.7=-1.5+1
Isolate m by adding 2.7 to both sides of the equation
m = -1.5 + 1 +2.7
m = 2.2
.
3(q-2)+2=5q-7-2q
fist combine like terms on both sides of the equation
3q -6 +2 = 3q - 7
3q -4 = 3q - 7
NOTE: There is no way to isolate the variable on one side of the equation
