an equation in function notation would be
f(x) = the relationship you are looking for.
examples:
f(x) = x^2 + 1
f(x) = 2*x + 33
f(x) = square root of (x-3)
----
if you let y = f(x), then these equations become
y = x^2 + 1
y = 2*x + 33
y = square root of (x-3)

you are solving the same equation.
the only difference is you are calling the dependent variable f(x) rather than something else like y.
your answer, instead of being y = 7, would be f(x) = 7.
different functions are called with different names, like
f(x)
g(x)
m(x)
-----
they all mean the same thing except they have different names because the functions are different and you need to differentiate between them.
f(x) = x
g(x) = 2*x
etc

f(x) and g(x) are both functions of x
