: Alright, I've got one last question. I keep getting half of what the book says the answer is. It seems like such a simple problem, but for some reason I just can't get an answer that matches the books! It's a word problem:
Harold Johnson lives on a four-sided, 50,000-square-foot lot that is bounded on two sides by parallel streets. The city has assessed him $1,000 for curb repair, $2 for each foot of property bordering on these two streets. How far apart are the streets?

Let's assume his property is a rectangle with length, L, and width, W.
The lengths, L, are the sides bordering the streets.
The distance between the street is then W.
We know the area,
