The domain of a function is the set of values that can be input to the function. There are three values mentioned in the taxi problem, the initial fee, the cost per mile, and the number of miles driven. The initial fee and the cost per mile are constants, and the total cost is a function of the variable "miles driven". So what is the acceptable set of values? The cab driver isn't going to put the cab in reverse and give you money for every mile driven backwards, so zero has to be the low end of your range. The problem gives you the high end.

Apply the same logic to the other problem.
