You can put this solution on YOUR website! Sketch the graph of the difference in volume V of two boxes with dimensions x,x,1 and x,8,1. What is the value of x that will make V a minimum?
-----------
Volume = the product of the 3 dimensions.
---
Vol1 = x^2
Vol2 = 8x
Difference = x^2-8x or 8x-x^2
---
x^2-8x = 0
x = 0 --> not a box
x = 8 --> the 2 volumes are equal.
-------
To graph it:
y = x^2 - 8x
Pick values for x and find y.
Plot the points, draw a curve thru them.
---
dl the FREE graph software at
www.padowan.dk
---
Use Insert, enter x^2 - 8x
Pick your color.
