Question 986108: John wants to center a canvas which is 8 ft wide on his living room wall which is 17 ft wide. Where on the wall should John mark the location of nails if the canvas requires nails every 1/5 of its length excluding the edges?

The center of the wall is 17 divided by 2, or 8.5 feet from either corner. If the canvas is centered, the left edge of the canvas must be 4 feet from the center, or 4.5 feet from the left corner of the wall. 8 divided by 5 is 1.6. So going from left to right, the first nail has to be 1.6 feet from the left edge of the canvas, which we have already established is 4.5 feet from the left corner of the wall.

First nail: 4.5 + 1.6 = 6.1 feet from the left corner.

Second nail: 6.1 + 1.6...

and so on for a total of 4 nails.
