Question 821908: please help me solve this question. "A group of 3 adults and 5 children pay a total of $52 for movie tickets. A group of 2 adults and 4 children pay a total of $38 for tickets. What is the cost of 1 adult ticket? What is the cost of 1 child ticket?" They are to the same problem. I can't find the answer. Please help me.

Let a = the cost of an adult ticket
Let c = the cost of a child's ticket

Write an equation for each statement
:
A group of 3 adults and 5 children pay a total of $52 for movie tickets.
3a + 5c = 52
:
A group of 2 adults and 4 children pay a total of $38 for tickets.
2a + 4c = 38
Simplify, divide by 2
a + 2c = 19
a = 19 - 2c, use this eq for substitution for a in the 1st equation
3(19-2c) + 5c = 52
57 - 6c + 5c = 52
-6c + 5c = 52 - 57
-c = -5
c = $5 for each child
then
a = 19 - 2(5)
a = $9 for each adult
