The total cost of a lot and house is $154,000. The cost of constructing the house is 7 times the cost of the lot. What is the cost of the lot?
We are having trouble getting verbal expression into an algebraic one to calculate these types of problems.

How do I create an algebraic formula for:
The total cost of a lot and house is $154,000. The cost of constructing the house is 7 times the cost of the lot. What is the cost of the lot?

L + H = 154000
H = 7L
----
Substitute for "H" and solve for "L":
L+7L = 154000
8L = 154000
L = $19.250 (cost of the lot)
