a chemist is going to mix a 15% acid solution with a 45% acid solutionm how many liters of each solution should she mix in order to get 48 liters of a 20% acid solution?
.
Let x = liters of 15% acid solution
then
48-x = liters of 45% acid
.
.14x + .45(48-x) = .20(48)
.14x + 21.6 - .45x = 9.6
21.6 - .31x = 9.6
-.31x = -12
x = -12/(-.31)
x = 38.71 liters (amount of 15% acid solution)
.
Amount of 45% acid solution:
48-x = 48-38.71 = 9.29 liters
