Graph the piecewise continuous function f(x)= {x,-2< x <1
x^2+1, x > 1 (this should be a equals or greater than symbol, but I can't type that on my keyboard.)

Graph the piecewise continuous function
f(x)= x, when -2< x <1
I'll describe what this means.
Draw a mark at x=-2 and at x = 1 on the x-axis.
Graph the line y = x for the values -2 < x < 1
How?
When x = -2, put a point at (-2,-2) and put a circle around it.
What x = 1, put a point at (1,1) and put a circle around it.
Draw a line segment joining those two circles.
That is one piece of the graph.

f(x) = x^2+1, when x > 1
Draw a mark at x = 1 on the x-axis.
Graph the curve y = x^2+1 for the values x>1.
How?
When x = 1, put a point at (1,2) and put a circle around it.
when x = 2, put a point at (2,5)
When x = 3, put a point at (3,10)
when x = 4, put a point at (4,17)
....
Draw the curve thru those points and continue it upward to the right.
That is the final piece of the graph.
