If you started with:
18 - 9y - 7y <50
Combine like-terms on the left:
18 - 16y <50
Subtract 18 from both sides:
18 - 16y - 18 <50-18
-16y < 32
Divide both sides by -16:
y > -2 (notice the < sign flipped to the > sign because of neg division)
