Question 1196255: To determine the number of in a lake , a conservationist catches 450 trout's , tags them, and releases them. Later 88 are caught, and it is found that 45 of them are tagged. Assuming that the proportion of tagged in the second sample was the same as the proportion of tagged in the total population, estimate the number of in the lake.

Method 1
450/x = 45/88
450/x = 450/880
x = 880
I multiplied top and bottom of the second fraction by 10

Method 2
450/x = 45/88
450*88 = x*45
45x = 39600
x = 39600/45
x = 880
In the second step, I crossed multiplied.

Answer: 880
This is an estimate, so the actual population count will likely be different from this.

As I understand from the post, the word is a variable value in the source,
which is changed from case to case to create/produce/generate new problems . . .

Just a note of information for you regarding this problem (which has nothing to do with math.)

The plural of trout, "trouts", indicates you are talking about different kinds of trout. The way this problem is worded, the conservationist caught 450 different KINDS of trout (and we don't know how many of each kind he caught).

Assuming the likely case where all the trout are of the same kind, the plural should not be used, so the statement of the problem should say that he caught 450 trout -- not 450 trouts.
