the student has 8.00 to spend.
the cost would be .34 + .24 * (x-1) for x >= 1.
when x = 1, the cost is .34 + .24 * 0 = .34
for x = 2, the cost is .34 + .24 * 1 = .58
for x = 3, the cost is .34 + .24 * 2 = .82
etc.
