The other tutor didn't read the problem correctly; or she doesn't know baseball....
The 38.7 meters is the diagonal of a square; the distance from home plate to first base is a side of the square. The length of the side of the square is the length of the diagonal, divided by the square root of 2.
= 27.4 meters, to one decimal place
Note the answer is reasonable, because 27.4 meters is 89.9 feet; and the distance from home plate to first base is 90 feet.
