i see the formula as:

f = p * e ^ (.0175 * x).

f is the future value
p is the present value
x is the number of years from the year 2000.

when x = 0, the year is 2000.
when x = 12, the year is 2012.

in this problem, p is equal to 5.89 billion.

formula for 2012 becomes 5.89 * e ^ (.0175 * 12) = 7.266363773 billion.
