1. The sum of the digits of a two-digit numeral is 6. The tens digit is 4 more than the units digit. Find the number.
Tens digit = x + 4
Units digit = x
(x + 4) + (x) = 6
2x + 4 = 6
2x = 2
x = 1
Tens digit = x + 4 = 1 + 4 = 5
Units digit = x = 1
The number is 51.

2. When Keith was born, his mother was 24 years old. Now, he is half his mother's age. Find their present ages.
Keith's age = x
Keith's mother's age = x + 24
x = 0.5(x + 24)
x = 0.5x + 12
0.5x = 12
x = 24
Keith's age = x = 24
Keith's mother's age = x + 24 = 24 + 24 = 48

3. If 2 and 1 is added and subtracted to the numerator and the denominator of a fraction, the resulting fraction becomes 3/4 and 3/5 respectively. Find the fraction.
Sorry...I do not understand what they are asking in this question.

4. How many gallons of a 20% antifreeze solution and a 10% antifreeze solution must be mixed to obtain 40 gallons of 16% antifreeze solution?
Gallons of 20% antifreeze solution = x
Gallons of 10% antifreeze solution = y
x + y = 40
0.20x + 0.10y = 0.16(40)
x + y = 40
0.20x + 0.10y = 6.4
Multiply second equation by -10:
x + y = 40
-2x - y = -64
Add both equations together and solve for x:
-x = -24
x = 24
Plug x = 24 into either equation and solve for y. (I'll use the first equation.)
x + y = 40
24 + y = 40
y = 16
Gallons of 20% antifreeze solution = x = 24
Gallons of 10% antifreeze solution = y = 16

5. A boat goes downstream 60 km in 4 hours. The return trip takes two hours longer. What is the rate of the current and the rate of the boat in still water?
Downstream:
Distance = 60
Rate = d/t = 15
Time = 4
Upstream:
Distance = 60
Rate = d/t = 10
Time = 6
The rate of the boat in still water is the midpoint between the rate downstream and the rate upstream.
So...the rate downstream is 15 kph and the rate upstream is 10 kph. The midpoint of these is 12.5 kph, so that's the rate of the boat in still water.
The rate of the current is 2.5 kph. This is found by simply adding/subtracting the 12.5 mph (the boat's rate in still water) from from rates downstream and upstream.
In other words, if the boat travels downstream at a rate of 15 kph, but the speed in still water is 12.5 kph, the rate of the current is the difference between 15 kph and 12.5 kph. Same goes with the boat travelling upstream. The boat travels upstream at a rate of 10 kph, and the speed in still water is 12.5 kph. The rate of the current is the difference between 10 kph and 12.5 kph.
