Question 116295: Jeff bought a dictionary for $54.99, a hardcover novel for $24.95, and a paperback mystery for $4.49. After paying for these (no sales tax), he had $2.51 left. How much money did Jeff have before he bought these books?

His items need added first. 54.99+24.95+4.49=84.43. You know he spent $84.43 when he left he had 2.51. Add the $2.51 to the total he spent 84.43 and you get $86.94. That is how much money he had when he went in to shop.
