    time to catch up =  =  = 10.5 hours = 10 hours and 30 minutes.    (1)



EXPLANATION    (in case if you need it . . . )


    The numerator  3.5*60 = 210 miles is the head start.

    The denominator (80-60) = 20 mph is the difference of their speeds, same as the rate of approaching.


    The formula (1) is the form of the standard formula  time =   adapted for this problem.

    Here the distance is the value of the head-start and rate is the rate of approaching.
