Answer by greenestamps(13200)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

d = # of dimes
q = # of quarters

The total number of coins is 24:

d+q = 24

Without any additional information, it is impossible to determine how much money she has.

As you understand,  there are many different cases,  starting from  24 quarters  (that give  6 dollars)
to  24 dimes  (that give only $2.40).

So,  the problem is uncompleted to have a unique answer.

Tutor @MathTherapy writes in his post
    "Since it contains either quarters or dimes, and NOT both, . . . "

But this  "and NOT both"  is just  INTERPRETATION,  which absents in the original text.

So,  I would be more careful,  by introducing an interpretation to the original text and stating then
that it is the only possible meaning.

It is NOT so.

Since it contains either quarters or dimes, and NOT both, then if the 24 are quarters, and with amount being A, we then get A = 24(.25) <===== Calculate this!
If the 24 are dimes, and with amount being A, we then get A = 24(.1) <===== Calculate this!
As stated it is one or the other, not both.
