Helping my grandson with some home work. I’m 60 years old and have not spent much time with algebra. Here’s the question. Brian has $50. He buys 20 similar books and has x dollars left. What is the cost of each book? 
Let cost of each book be B

Then total cost of books = 20B 

Also, total cost of books = 50 - x

We then get: 20B = 50 - x

Cost of each book, or
