Question 1121061: a store keeper earns a profit of rupees 250 on sale of one TV and a loss of rupees150 on sale of one laptop the store keeper sales 5700 TV and 2500 laptops in a month what is his profit or loss what number of TV must be store keeper sell to have neither profit nor loss if the number of laptops sold is 300.

positive profit is equal to negative loss.
positive loss is equal to negative profit.

looking at this from the profit perspective, then:

net profit = profit minus loss.

he sells 5700 televisions at a profit of 250 for each television to get a total profit of 5700 * 250 = 1,425,000 rupees.

he sells 2500 laptops at a loss of 150 for each laptop to get a total loss of 2500 * 150 = 375,000 rupees.

his total net profit is 1,425,000 minus 375,000 = 1,050,000 rupees.

if he sells 300 laptops, how many televisions must he sell in order to break even (neither profit nor loss).

let x = the number of televisions he needs to sell.

your equation becomes 0 = x * 250 - 300 * 150.

simplify to get 0 = 250 * x - 45,000.

solve for x to get x = 45,000 / 250 = 180.

he needs to sell 180 televisions to break even (neither profit nor loss).

that's your solution.

180 * 250 - 300 * 150 = 0
