White Rock is 35 km due west of Abbotsford.

The distance from Abbotsford to Surrey is 20 km more than the distance from White Rock to Surrey.
How far apart are surrey and Abbotsford?
:
We can draw this as a right triangle WAS, where sides:
WA = 35
SW = x
AS = (x+20), the hypotenuse
:
x^2 + 35^2 = (x+20)^2
x^2 + 1225 = x^2 + 40x + 400
Subtract x^2 from both sides
1225 = 40x + 400
1225 - 400 = 40x
825 = 40x
x = 825/40
x = 20.625 km from Surrey to White Rock
"How far apart are surrey and Abbotsford?"
20.625 + 20 = 40.625 km
