Question 1062230: A ship is sailing in the ocean when a passenger notices a submarine located 2.3 meters below the surface of the water. The angle of depression from the edge of the ship at the surface of the water to the submarine is 25.6°. What is the horizontal distance from the ship to the submarine, rounded to the nearest tenth of a meter?
4.8 m
2.6 m
5.3 m
1.1 m

Hi there,
Consider your problem as a right angled triangle.
Depth of submarine = opposite side = 2.3 metres
Angle of Depression = 25.6 degrees.
Horizontal distance of ship = Adjacent side.
Tan = Opposite/Adjacent
Tan(25.6) = 2.3/Adjacent
Cross multiply
Adjacent x Tan(25.6) = 2.3
Adjacent = 2.3/Tan(25.6)
Adjacent = 4.8 metres.
Horizontal distance = 4.8 metres.
Hope this helps :-)
