Your equation is 

 +  = 4.5    (4.5 = 4 hour and 30 minutes in hours)

Solve the equation for D. For it, multiply both sides for 100, as the first step. You will get

D + 2D = 450,

3D = 450,

D = 150 miles.

It is 1.5 hour at the speed of 100 mph and 3 hours at the speed of 50 mph.
