Question 1024545: Hi I have to find the values of P_1 and P_2 (where the underscore represents a subscript)
2P_1 -5P_2 = -6
and
-P_1 + 3P_2 = 4

I have tried the following but apparently it is incorrect:
D
for the first one I got the answers P_1 =(5P_2÷2)-3 and P_2 = (2P_1÷5)+(6÷5)
for the second I got P_1 = 3P_2-4 and P_2 = (P_1÷3)+(4÷3)
I don't know what I'm doing wrong

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
find the values of P_1 and P_2 (where the underscore represents a subscript)
2P1 -5P2 = -6
and
-P1 + 3P2 = 4
-----------------
Multiply thru the bottom equation by 2 to get:
2P1-5P2 = -6
-2p1+6P2 = 8
---------------
Add and solve for "P2"::
P2 = 2
----
Solve for P1::
P1 = 3P2-4
P1 = 6-4
P1 = 2
-------------

I'll change it to x and y, you can change it back.

Multiply the second equation by 2 and add to the first to eliminate x.

So then,
