Joe and Fred had an equal amount of money at first .
Joe spent $28 each day while Fred spend $15 each day .
After a few days ,Joe had $76 left while Fred had $180 left.
How much money did joe have at first?
:
Let a = the amount of money they had at first
let d = the no. of days they each spent that amt
:
Write an equation for each man
a - 15d = 180, Fred
a - 28d = 76, Joe
-------------------Subtraction eliminates a, find d
0 + 13d = 104
d = 104/13
d = 8 days
;
Find the amt using the Joe equation
a - 28(8) = 76
a - 124 = 76
a = 76 + 124
a = $300 Joe had at first
:
:
Check this in the Fred equation
300 - 15(8) = 180
300 - 120 = 180
