1. A rectangular piece of plywood is trimmed to make a square by cutting a 4-cm strip off the top and a 2-cm strip off one side. If the area of the original piece is 74 cm^2 (cm squared) greater than the area of the square, find the dimensions of the rectangle.
2. A small city park consists of a rectangular lawn surrounded on all sides by a 330m^2 ( m squared) border of flowers 2.5 m wide. Find the area of the lawn if the entire park is 5 m longer than it is wide.

: I am having trouble understanding how to do this type of problem... I know the answer of the second by plugging in (guessing) But I need to know how to do the formula and steps for a test on Friday.
1. Jessica has 16 dimes and quarters. Whitney has twice as many dimes and 1/3 as many quarters as Jessica has. If they both have the same amount of money, what coins does each have?
2.Esteban has 16 coins that total $3.00 If he has only nickels and quarters, how many quarters does he have?

A solar collector and its stand are in the shape of a right triangle. The
collector is 5.00 m long, the upright leg is 2.00 m long, and the base leg is 4.58 m
long. Because of inefficiencies in the collector’s position, it needs to be lowered
by 0.50 m on the upright leg. How long will the new base leg be? Round to the
nearest tenth.
