My reasoning: not enough information to determine the larger. Both yield a negative result unless one of the variables = zero, resulting in col a being larger in that case.

Insufficient information, but your reasoning is flawed.
What if one or more variables are negative?
If all are negative, both are positive
What if they are between -1 and 1? (The sum is larger than the product if all are between 0 and 1, product larger if all between -1 and 0)
What about combinations of fractions, positive and negative?
There really not enough information as given to make any assumption.
