Question 94953: expressions and formula?
3(4-7)-11
whats the answer?

Answer by bucky(2189)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Given:
.
3(4-7)-11
.
First do the work inside the parentheses. The 4 - 7 combine to -3 and when this result is
substituted into the expression it becomes:
.
3(-3) - 11
.
Next do the multiplication of 3 times -3 to get -9 which makes the expression:
.
-9 - 11
.
Finally, combine these two terms to get the answer - 20
.
An acronym that explains the order in which you do these operations is PEMDAS ...
meaning first P ... do the terms in parentheses; then E do the exponentiated terms, then
M & D ... from right to left do the multiplications and divisions as you encounter
them. Finally, A & S do the additions and subtractions from left to right as you encounter
them.
So in the above problem we first did the parentheses. There were no exponentiated
terms so from left to right we did the one multiplication. And finally from left to right
we did the additions and subtractions to get -20
.
Hope this helps.
