Question 942100: I'm not sure where to put this question. If I should be posting it in under another topic please could you let me know.
Question:
Differentiate (sq rt x + 1)^(2) / x
It looks simple but I can't do it at all.
I tried to differentiate (x^(1/2) + 1)x^(-1) but the answer I get is not the answer given in the textbook. I also tried to multiply out (sq rt x +1)^2 which came closer to the answer but that didn't work properly either.
The answer in the textbook is:
1-(1/(x*sq rt x))-(2/x^(3))
If someone could help me with this in any way I'd really appreciate it.
I'm not sure if I should be using substitution or the quotient rule here.

Assuming you mean :

A simple way is to expand the numerator, leaving . Then its derivative is taken simply by power rule.

You can also use the quotient rule, but it's a little messier.
