I'm not completely sure what you mean, but I'll take a shot at it.
In the expression -xy, the operation is multiplication of -x times y.
In the expression x(-y), again, the operation is multiplication of x times (-y).
However, int the expression -x-y, the operation is subtraction: it is -x minus y.
