Multiply everything in equation 1 by 3 to get 3x + 9y = 18

now add the equations

3x + 9y = 18
5x - 9y = 14
-------------
8x + 0y = 32

8x = 32

x = 32/8

x = 4

Once we know x, we can figure out y

x + 3y = 6

4 + 3y = 6

3y = 6-4

3y = 2

y = 2/3
