Question 82145: How do I solve this equation by substitution?
5x-2y=-5
y-5x=3

Answer by tutorcecilia(2152)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y-5x=3
y=5x+3 [solve for the y-term]
.
5x-2y=-5
5x-2(5x+3)=-5 [plug-in (y=5x+3) and solve for the x-term. use the other equation]
.
5x-10x-6=-5
-5x-6=-5
-5x-6+6=-5+6
-5x=1
-5x/-1=1/-1
x=-1 [plug-in (x=-1) and solve for the y-term. use either equation]
.
y-5(-1)=3
y+5=3
y+5-5=3-5
y=-2
.
Check by plugging (y=-2)and x=-1) back into either equation and solve:
y-5x=3
-2-5(-1)=3
-2+5=3
3=3 [checks out]
