let Carlos drive for x miles
Maria drives for 311-x miles
Carlos --speed = 53 mph: Carlos time = x/53
Maris speed = 53 mph: Maria time = (311-x)/51
Carlos time + Maria time = 6 hours
x/53 + (311-x)/51 =6
51x+53(311-x)= 6*51*53
51x+16483-53x=16218
-2x=-265
/-2
x=137.5 miles------ distance driven by Carlos
