1. Ellen wishes to mix candy worth $2.17 per pound with candy worth $3.55 per pound to form 24 pounds of a mixture worth $3.09 per pound. How many pounds of the more expensive candy should she use?
Let amt. of 2.17 candy be "x" lbs. ;Value of this is 217x cents
Amt of 3.55 candy is "24-x" lbs. Value is 355(24-x)= 8520-355x cents
Amt of mixture is 24 lbs; Value is 309(24)=7416 cents

EQUATION:
value + value = 7416 cents
217x + 8520-355x = 7416
-138x=-1104
x=8 lbs (amt of $2.17 candy in the mixture)
24-x= 16 lbs (amt of $3.55 candy in the mixture)

2. A cruise boat travels 84 miles downsteam in 3 hours and returns to its starting point upstream in 6 hours. Find the speed of the stream.
Downstream DATA:
distance = 84 miles; time = 3 hrs; rate= d/t=84/3 = 28 mph

Upstream DATA:
distance = 84 miles ; time 6 hrs; rate = d/t = 84/6 = 14 mph

boat speed + stream = 28 mph
boat speed - stream = 14 mph

Add the two equations to get:
2b=42
b=21
Then 21 + stream speed = 28 mph
stream speed = 7 mph
