"The larger of 2 numbers is 8 more than 4 times the smaller. If the larger is increased by 4 times the smaller, the result is 40. Find the numbers!"
Any help would be great!!! This question is not out of the textbook, it is from a hand out from the teacher.

I have a question regarding the correct setup of this sentence.
"The larger of 2 numbers is 8 more than 4 times the smaller. If the larger is increased by 4 times the smaller, the result is 40. Find the numbers!"
Let x=smaller number
Then 4x+8=larger number
If the larger is increased by 4 times the smaller (4x+8)+4x
Now we are told that:
(4x+8)+4x=40 subtract 8 from both sides
4x+8-8+4x=40-8 collect like terms
8x=32
x=4-----------------smaller number
4x+8=4(4)+8;
16+8=24-----------------larger number

8 more than 4 times the smaller equals the larger:
4(4)+8=24
24=24
When larger increased by four times the smaller equals 40
24+4(4)=40
40=40
